Show, Don't Tell

I am currently reading How to Write a Dirty Story by Susie Bright and I am in love. I plan on adopting "show, don't tell" (pg 106) as my new writing mantra. Even if you don't plan on publishing your work or sharing it with the www, like myself, reading this book has been very enlightening.
Over the weekend, besides going to Holy Land, Magic Kingdom, juggling my family and my homework, I've been doing some studying of the erotic writing craft and I've come to the realization that there is a really big field I have yet to explore. I am only too eager to jump in. When she suggested to hit the reading couch if you don't recognize certain genres of the craft (erotic horror, erotic mystery, etc), I took her advice immediately. To supplement my studies, I've chosen The Best of Best American Erotica 2008 and have found it to be a goldmine of examples and writing styles. I don't like all the stories, but each one has a nugget that you can extract from it.
As a sociology and women's studies major, sexuality has been a very interesting area of study for me. Erotica, pornography and people's experiences are all very important to understanding sexuality... Someone once said that at the end of the line, sexuality underlines our every choice, our politics and our religion...A professor once told me that if you control people's sexuality, you control the people... There is a relationship sexuality has to the manipulation of people...can't say much else because I'm still dissecting and researching.

Anyways, other reads off the top of my head to look into if you found the above interesting:

  • Betty Dodson and Carlin Ross (http://dodsonandross.com/).
  • Nancy Friday
  • Our Sexuality by Robert L. Crooks and Karla Baur
